One of my favorite things to teach about is the concept of expected versus unexpected behavior---what does “expected” mean, can it change from one person or situation to another, and how do people feel when someone is acting in an unexpected way?

I’ve used these pages with great success in whole-class lessons as well as with smaller groups. For a whole class, I give each child one of the four scenes and go over the directions. When they have finished circling and x-ing, they may color the picture in. Many kids ask to try another scene after they finish the first. In a small group they almost always have time to do multiple scenes.

I haven’t included an answer key, since I’ve already discovered that a behavior that is “expected” by one teacher or in one school (e.g., sharing a cookie at lunch) is considered “unexpected” by others.

The 4 scenes from school that are included are:

classroom

cafeteria

gym

library
